January 4, 2017 - Object Lessons series editors Ian Bogost (Georgia Institute of Technology) and Christopher Schaberg (Loyola University New Orleans) have been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to create a traveling seminar program for writers, arranged to coincide with major academic conferences across the U.S.
Object Lessons is an essay and book series about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Bloomsbury published the first books in the series in January 2015 with Remote Control, Golf Ball, Driver’s License and Drone. 32 books will be available in the book series before the end of 2017 (current title list can be found here >>)
The series attracts a large number of pitches on a daily basis, from across a range of disciplines and fields inside and outside of academia. The unifying feature is the focus on single things, and a commitment to writing intelligently and imaginatively, reflecting the latest advances in the humanities while using jargon-free language.
Conceived as a response to the crises in the public humanities, Bogost and Schaberg’s proposal, called the “Object Lessons Institute”, seeks to help bridge the gap between scholarly writing and the wider market of readers. Bogost and Schaberg are creating a series of 2-day writing workshops across the U.S. that will cover pitching, proposing and crafting essays and book manuscripts, based on what they have learned running the Object Lessons series.
Bogost and Schaberg will conduct the workshops over the 2017-2018 academic year
"The Object Lessons series achieves something very close to magic: the books take ordinary—even banal—objects and animate them with a rich history of invention, political struggle, science, and popular mythology. Filled with fascinating details and conveyed in sharp, accessible prose, the books make the everyday world come to life. Be warned: once you've read a few of these, you'll start walking around your house, picking up random objects, and musing aloud: 'I wonder what the story is behind this thing?'" —Steven Johnson, bestselling author of How We Got to Now
