Historicizing Modernism

I am excited to say that we have just published the first two books in our new series Historicizing Modernism. 

 This new series challenges traditional literary interpretations by taking an empirical approach to modernist writing: a direct response to new documentary sources made available over the last decade.

Informed by archival research, and working beyond the usual European/American avant-garde 1900-1945 parameters the series reassesses established images of modernist writers by developing fresh views of intellectual backgrounds and working methods. The series editors are Matthew Feldman (University of Northampton, UK) and Erik Tonning (University of Bergen, Norway).

The first book in the series is Samuel Beckett's German Diaries 1936 - 1937 by Mark Nixon. It looks at the diary notebooks kept by Samuel Beckett during his 1936-7 trip through Nazi Germany, exploring the relevance of these diaries to Beckett’s development as a writer. Secondly, we are publishing Katherine Mansfield and Literary Modernism by Janet Wilson, Gerri Kimber and Susan Reid at the beginning of May. This book places Mansfield firmly at the centre of Modernism, reinternpreting her work and remarkable rise in her reputation over the last couple of years.
